The Gill MaxiMet series represents a significant evolutionary step in compact, solid-state weather stations. These ones are specifically engineered for applications where wind measurement requires intelligent onboard processing. At the core of every wind-focused MaxiMet model is a maintenance-free, 2-axis ultrasonic anemometer that completely eliminates the mechanical wear, friction thresholds, and frequent recalibration associated with traditional cup-and-vane sensors.
What sets the MaxiMet apart from entry-level sensors like the WindSonic is its integrated spatial intelligence. By embedding an internal electronic compass directly into the sensor head, the instrument continuously tracks its physical heading. This allows the station to automatically correct wind direction data in the field, compensating for mast sway or minor installation misalignment. For mobile platforms—such as utility vehicles, emergency response trailers, or marine vessels—selecting a MaxiMet variant with an integrated GPS module enables the system to cross-reference ground speed and heading. It instantly filters out the vehicle’s movement to calculate and stream precise True Wind Speed and Direction alongside standard Apparent and or Relative Wind readings.
In standard stationary deployments, an anemometer must be meticulously hand-aligned to True North during installation. The MaxiMet reimagines this workflow by embedding an internal electronic compass directly into the sensor head.
Automatic Alignment: If a mounting mast sways, shifts, or is installed slightly off-angle, the internal compass continuously tracks the instrument’s real-time heading, automatically correcting the wind direction data before it ever reaches your data logger.
The GPS Advantage (True Wind Measurement): For mobile applications—such as utility vehicles, emergency response trailers, or marine vessels—measuring wind becomes incredibly complex because the movement of the vehicle distorts the reading. By opting for a MaxiMet variant with an integrated GPS module, the station cross-references its internal compass, real-time ground speed, and heading. It instantly filters out the vehicle’s movement to output True Wind Speed and Direction alongside Apparent Wind data.
Unlike basic anemometers that only stream instantaneous wind speed and direction, the MaxiMet features an internal microprocessor that calculates complex environmental data natively. This gives technical teams access to advanced parameters without writing extensive post-processing scripts on a PLC or logger:
WMO Wind Statistics: Outputs true World Meteorological Organisation averages, wind gusts, and peak direction vectors.
Calculated Atmospheric Data: Depending on the exact MaxiMet model chosen (e.g., GMX500 or GMX600), the station uses its primary temperature, pressure, and humidity sensors to calculate and stream Dew Point, Heat Index, Air Density, and Barometric Corrected Altitude.
The GMX200 features just the wind sensor, the GMX260 is the marine equivalent, whilst others integrate a range of different sensors that suit a range of different applications. The full range can be found in the weather station section.
