How does the GMX600 measure rain without a bucket?

Omni Instruments Expert Response: It uses an infrared beam across the top of the unit. As raindrops fall through the beam, the sensor analyzes the size and frequency of the drops to calculate the rainfall total and intensity, emulating a tipping bucket output digitally.

Is it as accurate as a tipping bucket?

Omni Instruments Expert Response: The optical sensor is excellent for detecting the start of rain and general intensity, making it perfect for alerts and automation. However, for "Reference Quality" WMO data where every 0.1mm of accumulation is critical, we recommend the GMX531 with a physical Kalyx bucket.

Does it require cleaning?

Omni Instruments Expert Response: Because it is solid-state, it is "low maintenance," not "no maintenance." We recommend wiping the top optical sensor every 3-6 months to prevent dirt or bird droppings from affecting the infrared beam.

Omni Instruments Expert Response: The standard GMX600 is designed for liquid precipitation. In cold climates, the Heated Variant is required to ensure that snow or frost does not accumulate on the sensor surfaces, which would interfere with the infrared and ultrasonic readings.

What is the benefit of the GPS option?

Omni Instruments Expert Response: For stationary sites, GPS provides a "Golden Time" reference and location metadata. For mobile sites (like a vehicle or ship), it allows the station to calculate "True Wind" by subtracting the vehicle's movement from the reported wind speed.

The MaxiMet GMX600 is the ultimate all-in-one meteorological solution for sites where high-frequency, maintenance-free data is the priority.
