DustIQ Soiling Monitoring System

  • Description

Description

The DustIQ Soiling Monitoring System by Kipp & Zonen represents a significant advancement in the management of PV solar power plants, offering a precise and maintenance-free solution for measuring the impact of dust and dirt on energy production. In large-scale solar installations, “soiling”, the accumulation of particulate matter on panels, can lead to substantial energy losses that vary significantly across a plant’s footprint due to local wind patterns and module placement. The DustIQ addresses this challenge by utilising unique Optical Soiling Measurement (OSM) technology to monitor transmission loss and the soiling ratio 24/7. Unlike traditional methods that may require sunlight or complex mechanical parts, the DustIQ operates continuously, updating its readings every minute, day or night, to provide operators with real-time data on exactly when and where cleaning is required.

Designed for seamless integration, the DustIQ is constructed from the same materials and features similar dimensions to industry-standard silicon PV modules. This design allows it to be installed directly within an array, whether on the side, top, or in-between modules, ensuring it experiences the exact same environmental conditions and dust accumulation as the surrounding solar panels. By mimicking the characteristics of the actual PV modules, including the use of glass with anti-reflection coating, the DustIQ provides far more reliable and representative measurements than standalone sensors. The system also tracks critical environmental factors, including PV module temperature and tilt angles, reporting all data via Modbus RTU RS485 serial communication for easy connection to local monitoring equipment or SCADA systems.

Key Technical Capabilities

  • Accurate Measurement: Reports Transmission Loss (TL) from 0 to 50% and Soiling Ratio (SR) from 100 to 50% with an accuracy of ±0.1 of the reading.
  • Maintenance-Free Operation: With no external moving parts, the system requires no separate maintenance<. It is simply cleaned at the same time as the surrounding PV modules, whether using manual methods or automated robots.
  • Robust Construction: The unit features an IP65 rating and is built to operate in ambient temperatures ranging from -20 to +60°C.
  • Integrated Sensors: Includes a PV panel temperature sensor accurate to ±1°C and tilt sensors covering a full -180 to 180 degree range.

The cost-effectiveness of the DustIQ encourages the deployment of multiple units across a site. This enables the creation of a comprehensive soiling map, allowing plant managers to optimize cleaning schedules and maximize the return on investment for the entire solar facility. By providing a clear picture of transmission loss, the percentage of sunlight blocked or scattered before reaching the solar cells, the DustIQ ensures that maintenance resources are deployed only when and where they are truly needed.
