GL980 MidiLogger

The Graphtec GL980 is a high-speed, standalone data logger featuring 8 isolated channels designed to measure rapid voltage fluctuations and temperature simultaneously. Utilising an independent Analogue-to-Digital (A/D) converter for each channel, it achieves simultaneous sampling rates up to 1 MS/s (1 µs interval) without any speed degradation. It bridges the gap between traditional long-term data loggers and complex transient capture oscilloscopes, packing built-in RAM and a high-resolution colour display into a portable, battery-ready chassis.

Unlike its competitors the GL980 has a versatile dual-connection architecture. Each channel features both an isolated BNC input and a parallel screw terminal, allowing engineers to switch effortlessly between high-speed voltage probes and standard thermocouples without needing external terminal blocks or adapters.

Features

  • 1 MS/s True Simultaneous Sampling: Eight dedicated A/D converters guarantee a continuous 1 µs sampling interval across all channels without multiplexing delays.
  • Galvanically Isolated Channels: Protects sensitive signals and external equipment from ground loops and channel-to-channel cross-talk up to 250 Vrms.
  • Dual Input Configuration: Features both BNC and screw-terminal inputs on every channel for seamless multi-sensor integration (Voltage, Temp, Humidity, Logic/Pulse).
  • Deep Transient RAM Buffer: Stores up to 4 million samples per channel in high-speed internal RAM, capturing ultra-fast waveforms that traditional flash memory cannot write in real time.
  • Advanced Web & Network Control: Built-in Ethernet and USB ports support FTP backup, NTP time sync, and a remote web browser interface for hands-free system monitoring.

Applications

Measuring True-RMS values and harmonic distortion in high-speed power electronics and motor drives.
Simultaneous 1µs sampling allows for precise phase-aligned vibration monitoring across multiple axes.
Capturing rapid voltage drops or temperature spikes during heavy industrial mechanical load tests.
Monitoring EV battery discharge rates and rapid electronic control unit (ECU) signals.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ Q: What is the maximum safe input voltage for the GL980?
A: The GL980 features isolated analogue inputs rated for a maximum input voltage of 500 V DC or 250 Vrms. It is designed for multi-channel, lower-to-medium voltage environments. Exceeding these thresholds, even briefly, will permanently damage the logger's internal semiconductor relays. For systems operating at higher voltages, the CAT III-rated GL2000 is recommended.
▶ Q: Can I use both the BNC and screw terminals on a channel at the same time?
A: No. Although each channel features both a BNC connector and an M3 screw terminal for layout flexibility, they share the exact same internal circuitry and ground path. Connecting signals to both terminals simultaneously will lead to short circuits, signal corruption, or severe damage to the instrument.
▶ Q: Does the sampling speed drop if I record on all 8 channels simultaneously?
A: No. The GL980 is designed with eight independent 16-bit A/D converters (one per channel). This dedicated hardware allows the unit to sustain a true simultaneous sampling rate of 1 MS/s (1 µs interval) across all eight channels without the timing delays or speed degradation typical of multiplexed loggers.
▶ Q: Why can't I record high-speed data (faster than 1 ms) directly to my SD card or USB drive?
A: Standard external flash media (SD cards and USB drives) cannot reliably keep up with the extreme, continuous write speeds required for sub-millisecond logging.
