Magnetic Door Sensor

The Teracom TSD800 is an industrial-grade, heavy-duty magnetic door contact sensor designed to track the open or closed status of security doors, windows, structural access hatches, and equipment enclosures. Built to withstand harsher physical conditions than generic plastic security contacts, the TSD800 features a rugged zinc alloy housing and complete IP65 ingress protection.

It is ideal for monitoring server room access doors, secure data vaults, freezer rooms, warehouse perimeters, commercial offices, and hotel window arrays where structural durability and environmental sealing are required.

Core Hardware & Contact Mechanism

The TSD800 is a two-piece proximity system consisting of an active reed switch sensor element equipped with connection leads and a matching permanent magnet piece.

  • Dry Contact Relay Output: Operating on standard electromagnetic physics, the sensor functions entirely as a passive dry contact switch. When the door is closed and the magnet aligns with the sensor housing, the internal reed contact closes. The moment the magnet moves away (the door or window opens), the circuit breaks.
  • Wide Sensing Gap Architecture: Unlike residential contacts that require tight physical alignment to prevent false alarms, the TSD800 is engineered with a wide operational sensing gap. This wide spacing accommodates natural door warping, structural shifting, sag, and heavy vibration without causing intermittent loop faults or false intrusion alerts.
  • Industrial Zinc Enclosure: Shifting away from fragile plastic shells, both parts of the TSD800 are cast in a heavy zinc alloy. This metallic armor prevents physical damage from impacts, tools, or carts, making the assembly suitable for heavy commercial or industrial facility maintenance routes.

Technical Specifications

  • Sensor Type: Magnetic proximity reed switch contact.
  • Housing Material: Heavy-duty zinc alloy.
  • Ingress Protection Rating: IP65 (fully sealed against dust and low-pressure water washdowns).
  • Maximum Switching Voltage: 30VDC.
  • Maximum Switching Current: 0.2A (200mA).
  • Operational Logic State: Contact is Closed when both components are close to each other (Door Closed); contact is Open when separated (Door Open).
  • Mounting Method: Secure screw-mount base (eliminates failure-prone adhesive tape mounts).
  • Physical Profile: Compact footprint (50 x 14 x 10 mm) equipped with 30cm pre-wired connection tails.

System Integration & Automation Scenarios

Because the TSD800 operates as a standard voltage-free dry contact, it interfaces directly with the Digital Input (DI) channels of any controller, including the Teracom TCG120-4, TCG140-4, or the TCW network I/O series. When brought into a Teracom telemetry layout, the state changes from the TSD800 can be used to coordinate server room asset protection or optimise building energy profiles:
  • Intrusion & After-Hours Auditing: Monitors unauthorised perimeter entry into unmanned server hubs or remote telecom stations, logging exact time-stamped entry/exit rows to internal memory.
  • Smart HVAC Energy Interlocks: Dynamically signals commercial building management systems (BMS) or hotel room climate loops to shut off local air-conditioning zones if an exterior window or balcony door remains propped open for more than a few minutes.
  • Instant Over-the-Air Notifications: Instructs the host controller to immediately broadcast encrypted emails or localised SMS priority strings to facilities managers the second a critical cleanroom door or server rack enclosure is breached.
  • SCADA & Cloud API Pipeline: Packs the binary door status into a lightweight JSON or XML payload, passing live operational counts over MQTT or HTTPS protocols to centralised facility dashboards.

Unlike standard retail security contacts, the TSD800 is a screw-mounted, zinc-alloy component engineered for industrial durability with no internal battery or configuration requirements. It relies entirely on its rugged IP65 enclosure and a wide sensing gap to pass continuous, fail-safe contact states straight to your telemetry controllers, ensuring mechanical doors remain tracked and secure across demanding facilities.

Applications

Low-power, point-specific detection for remote cabinets where a full DIN-rail system is overkill.
Mounted directly in AC condensate trays to detect overflows before they damage ceiling tiles or office equipment.
Placed at the lowest point of a server room floor to catch pipe bursts or cooling system failures.
Easy integration into security panels or smart home hubs using the open-drain output for domestic flood alerts.
Internal monitoring for industrial cabinets where internal condensation or external ingress could cause electrical shorts

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ Q: How does the TSF400-0 actually detect water?
A: The sensor operates on a localised resistive conductivity principle. The bottom base of the housing features 5 machined metallic contact electrodes: one central prong and four outer perimeter prongs. The moment pooling water bridges the gap between any of the four outer grounding points and the central sensing electrode, the internal circuit shifts states to trigger an alert.
▶ Q: What type of output interface does the sensor use?
A: It is equipped with an N-channel open-drain digital output (equivalent to an NPN open-collector layout). To protect your connected equipment, this switching line is rated strictly up to a maximum threshold of 30VDC @ 100mA sink current.
▶ Q: Does the sensor require external power to operate?
A: Yes, the internal active monitoring electronics require a continuous power supply. It features a wide input range of 4.5 to 26VDC and is extremely power efficient, drawing a minimal maximum supply current of only 5mA at 12VDC during standard standby.
▶ Q: Is the sensor reusable after a leak event is detected?
A: Yes, completely. The device uses heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant metallic electrodes designed to withstand standing water exposure. Once a leak has been successfully addressed, simply clean and wipe the base electrodes dry with a cloth. The internal logic will automatically reset the output back to its dry status.
▶ Q: What diagnostic tools are built into the unit for field checks?
A: The housing features a built-in dual-color status LED. This provides field technicians with instant visual diagnostics during a site walkthrough: the lens glows Green when power is stable and the floor is dry, and shifts instantly to Red the moment a leak is actively detected.
