Smoke Detector

The Teracom TSS8030R is an industrial-grade photoelectric smoke detector designed to provide reliable early warning of smoke or smoldering fire inside high-value environments. Optimised for integration with automation systems, it protects data centres, server rooms, remote telecom stations, and electrical enclosures.

Housed in a durable, sleek enclosure, the sensor relies on a precise optical scatter chamber to maximise sensitivity to smoke particles while minimising false alarms caused by ambient dust or air velocity changes.

Core Engineering & Latching Relay Logic

Unlike standard residential smoke alarms that auto-clear when smoke dissipates, the TSS8030R is engineered for unsupervised industrial facility safety using specialised latching circuit logic:

  • Photoelectric Sensing Chamber: The internal chamber features an infrared light source and a photosensitive receiver positioned at an angle. Under normal conditions, light passes straight through empty air. The moment smoke particles enter the labyrinth, they scatter the infrared light, redirecting it onto the optical sensor to trip the alarm.
  • Latching Alarm Relay: When an alert is tripped, the internal Form A (Normally Open) relay closes and locks into place. Even if smoke clears or air currents purge the room, the circuit remains closed. This ensures a critical fire event cannot erase itself from a controller’s digital monitoring log before a field technician manually investigates the root cause and resets the device via a power cycle.

Technical Specifications

  • Operating Supply Range: 9 to 30VDC.
  • Current Consumption: Extremely low standby current of 0.1mA; active alarm current of 35mA.
  • Relay Output Rating: Dry contact Form A, rated strictly up to 30VDC @ 1A resistive load.
  • Coverage Area: Up to 120 m² tracking footprint depending on ceiling profile and local regulations.
  • Physical Profile: Standard ceiling-mount footprint 100 mm x 46 mm base configuration).

System Integration & Safety Interlocking

Because the output is a standard voltage-free dry contact relay, the TSS8030R wires cleanly into a standard Digital Input (DI) channel on any Teracom controller, such as the TCG120-4, TCG140-4, or TCW network series.

When integrated into a broader environmental matrix, the closing of the smoke detector’s relay can be paired with automated controller logic to execute immediate, multi-tier safety overrides:

  • Power Isolation Interlocks: Instantly trips a secondary high-power relay to disconnect electricity from affected server racks or electrical sub-panels, removing the primary ignition source.
  • HVAC Air Dampening: Instructs Building Management System (BMS) actuators to close fresh-air intake dampers, preventing incoming oxygen from feeding a localised fire or halting smoke migration into adjacent cleanrooms.
  • High-Priority Telemetry Alerts: Overrides standard reporting intervals to instantly push critical SMS emergency strings and automated emails to up to five unique field responders.
  • Unified Enterprise Logging: Pushes a high-priority XML or JSON alarm payload over MQTT or HTTPS to central SCADA systems, ensuring the fire event is immediately time-stamped and logged across the network.

Applications

Fast tracking of smoke plumes near delicate electronic hardware, providing isolated dry-contact alerting directly to automated fire suppression or emergency HVAC shutdown systems.
Remote fire monitoring over IP networks or 4G links inside unstaffed cellular gear installations.
Simple integration via clean NO/NC relay outputs into larger multi-vendor facility safety networks.
Secure protection inside high-voltage utility infrastructure blocks where automated internal self-compensation cuts down on recurring routine maintenance calls.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ Q: How does the "self-compensation" feature reduce false alarms?
A: Over time, dust and ambient airborne particulates accumulate inside any optical smoke sensor's chamber. The TSS8030R is equipped with a microprocessor running an advanced background algorithm that tracks this slow baseline shift. It automatically adjusts the internal detection threshold to account for contamination build-up, ensuring the preset smoke sensitivity level remains stable and preventing false alarms.
▶ Q: How do I clean the optical chamber when it signals a contamination alert?
A: When the LEDs flash every second, you must remove the sensor head from its base and detach the outer plastic cover by rotating it counter-clockwise. Remove the inner optical chamber cover and insect screen. You can wash the screen and chamber cover using standard liquid detergent, ensuring they are completely dry before reassembly. Dust out the main optical block using a small, soft brush before reinstalling the assembly.
▶ Q: What is the maximum physical area a single TSS8030R can monitor?
A: A single detector can safely cover a horizontal circular zone up to 15 meters in diameter when mounted on a ceiling at a maximum height of up to 11 meters.
▶ Q: Does this unit feature a latching or non-latching relay configuration?
A: The TSS8030R uses a latching system for active fire events. Once a fire threshold is crossed, the internal potential-free relay toggles state, and the diagnostic LEDs turn solid red. The device will remain locked in this alarm state even if the smoke fully clears. To return the unit to standard monitoring duty mode, power to the device must be interrupted for at least 2 seconds via your connected controller.
▶ Q: How does the anti-tamper physical lock protect the hardware installation?
A: The TSS8030R base is equipped with an integrated locking click mechanism. Before ceiling installation, an included mechanical key can be detached from the base, allowing the installer to activate a hard structural latch. Once twisted into place on the base plate, the detector head cannot be rotated or pulled off by unauthorised personnel without re-inserting the physical key into the dedicated release slot

TSS8030R

TSS8030R

The TSS8030R is a smoke detector designed for early fire warning by detecting a fixed level of smoke concentration through infrared ray scattering in its optic chamber, with factory-preset sensitivity. Controlled by a microprocessor utilising an enhanced algorithm for self-compensation of chamber contamination, this smoke sensor features a relay output, enabling its use with controllers that have digital inputs operating in "dry contact" mode. Smoke sensitivity complies with EN 54-7:2000+ A1:2002;

Unlike standard residential alarms, the TSS8030R is engineered strictly as a system-powered, four-wire industrial component with no internal battery or audible buzzer. It relies entirely on an external 9-30VDC power loop and its integrated latching relay to signal automated controllers, ensuring critical fire events are immediately transmitted across your telemetry network rather than just sounding in an empty room.
