TCG120 Remote Monitoring Controller

Teracom’s TCG120-4 is a rugged, compact 4G LTE wireless I/O module engineered for dependable “last-mile” data acquisition and remote asset control. Built to operate seamlessly where local Wi-Fi or Ethernet infrastructure is unavailable, it provides automated fallback to 3G and 2G networks to guarantee remote signal integrity.

Whether integrated into a centralised SCADA network or acting as a standalone, offline industrial controller, the TCG120-4 bridges the gap between field-level physical parameters and cloud-hosted data centres.

Key Technical Capabilities

  • Flexible I/O Footprint: Equipped with 2 Digital Inputs (supporting “dry contact” and “logic level” modes) for security doors, level switches, or pulse counters, and 2 Analogue Inputs with a wide 0 to 60VDC range, ideal for direct solar panel array, battery bank, or 4-20mA transducer monitoring via a scaling multiplier.
  • Dual Form C Relays: Features 2 Relay Outputs with both Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) contacts rated up to 3A @ 24VDC / 30VAC. These can be triggered remotely via SMS/API or driven locally by sensor threshold logic.
  • 1-Wire Sensor Expansion: A dedicated, powered 1-Wire interface supports up to 4 Teracom digital sensors simultaneously (such as the TSH2xx temperature/humidity series or TSC200 current loop transmitters).
  • M2M Network Communication: Native support for modern IoT pipelines including MQTT (v3.1.1) for bandwidth-efficient publish/subscribe messaging, and HTTP/HTTPS POST pushing automated XML or JSON status payloads directly to your endpoint server.

Standalone vs. Network-Driven

A core feature of the TCG120-4 is its capacity for autonomous, local control. By executing built-in conditional hysteresis logic, the controller can process inputs and toggle its onboard relays entirely offline. For example, if an analogue level sensor registers an over-voltage or a 1-Wire sensor crosses a temperature threshold, the unit can activate a local pump or cooling fan without needing server validation, whilst simultaneously firing out up to 5 SMS or email alerts.

4G Coverage

The primary distinction between the legacy TCG120 and the latest TCG120-4 version is their mobile network connectivity: the TCG120 operated on only the 2G (GSM/GPRS) networks, while the TCG120-4 is the new upgraded version that supports 4G LTE Cat. 1, with backward compatibility to 2G (TCG120-4E covers 2G and 3G). This makes the TCG120-4 the better choice as 2G networks are being phased out in many regions.

The TCG120-4E covers bands:

4G LTE: B1/B3/B5/B7/B8/B20
2G: B3/B8

The TCG120-4G covers bands:

4G LTE: B1/B2/B3/B4/B5/B7/B8/B12/B13/B18/B19/B20/B25/B26/B28/B66/B34/B38/B39/B40/B41
3G: B1/B2/B4/B5/B6/B8/B19
2G: B2/B3/B5/B8

The TCG120-4 represents the baseline ideal for localised telemetry, such as automated water pump stations, street lighting management, or server room climate safety loops. If your application demands extensive on-site data retention or battery-powered deep sleep states, look to the TCG140-4. For larger processing hubs incorporating legacy RS485 machinery, the TCG140-4 offers the necessary hardware expansion.

Applications

Geolocation and refrigeration monitoring across international borders using the 4G-Global variant.
Remote pump and tank level monitoring in remote areas with limited cellular bandwidth via MQTT.
Monitoring voltage (up to 60VDC) on remote power systems without additional transducers.
Direct monitoring of 12V/24V/48V battery banks in off-grid solar sites via 60V analogue inputs.
Multi-point temperature/humidity tracking in server rooms using the daisy-chained 1-Wire bus.
Automated gate/door control via SMS or missed-call relay activation (up to 100 authorised numbers).
Real-time telemetry for PLC-less installations using MQTT to cloud dashboards.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ Q: Can I use the TCG120-4 to log data for several months without an internet connection?
A: No. The TCG120 series is designed as a real-time controller, not a standalone logger. It does not have significant internal storage for historical data. It is intended to "push" data immediately to a server via MQTT or HTTP Post. If you require internal data logging to prevent data loss during cellular outages, you should upgrade to the TCG140-4 variant, which includes an internal FLASH memory for up to 70,000 records.
▶ Q: Does the TCG120-4 support secure email alerts?
A: Yes. The TCG120-4 supports TLS over SMTP, which is required for modern email services like Gmail, Outlook 365, and private corporate mail servers. This ensures your alarm notifications are encrypted and compliant with modern security standards.
▶ Q: How many sensors can I connect to the 1-Wire interface?
A: You can connect up to 4 Teracom sensors (such as the TST103 or TSH206) to the TCG120’s 1-Wire bus. These can be daisy-chained using standard UTP/FTP cabling. If you need more than 4 sensors or require RS485 Modbus RTU support, the TCG140 is the recommended alternative, supporting up to 8 sensors.
▶ Q: Can the relays be controlled without a cellular signal?
A: Yes, via "Offline Logic." You can configure the module to trigger its relays based on local sensor thresholds (e.g., "if temperature > 25°C, turn on Relay 1"). This allows the device to function as an autonomous thermostat or safety cut-off even if the mobile network is down.

  • The “TCG120-4E” Version: Designed exclusively for deployment within Europe and regions sharing identical telecom architectures. It features a streamlined, cost-effective cellular modem engineered to cover the standard EU 4G LTE and 2G bands.
  • The “TCG120-4G” Version: This is the unrestricted, Global version. It integrates a wide-spectrum international multi-band modem supporting a massive list of regional frequencies (including North American, South American, and Asia-Pacific bands like LTE B12, B13, B25, or B66) alongside standard European networks.
