Description
The RFX Gateway is the central receiver for the system. Its primary function is to receive temperature data from the RFX Meat probes via a powerful radio frequency signal and then transmit that data to your smartphone or tablet through Wi-Fi. This allows you to monitor your cook from anywhere with an internet connection, without being limited by the short range of a Bluetooth signal.
Key Features of the RFX Gateway:
- Superior Connectivity: The Gateway uses a sub-GHz radio frequency (RF) signal to communicate with the probes. This lower frequency allows the signal to “blast through” obstacles like thick oven doors, smoker walls, and even house walls, which are known to weaken higher-frequency Bluetooth signals.
- Wi-Fi Connectivity: Once the Gateway receives the data from the probe, it connects to your home’s 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network to send the information to the ThermoWorks ETI app. This enables truly remote monitoring.
- High Probe Capacity: A single RFX Gateway can connect to and monitor over 50 RFX Meat probes simultaneously, making it ideal for professional kitchens, caterers, or barbecue enthusiasts who are cooking multiple cuts of meat at once.
- Includes an Ambient Probe: The RFX Gateway comes with a separate, wired Pro-Series Air Probe. This probe plugs directly into the Gateway to accurately measure the ambient temperature inside your grill, oven, or smoker, avoiding the inaccurate readings that can occur with sensors located on the meat probe itself.
- Compatibility: The Gateway is compatible with the optional Billows BBQ control fan, allowing for automated temperature control in your smoker or grill.
- App and Cloud Integration: The free mobile app allows for real-time monitoring, setting high/low alarms, and viewing live temperature graphs. You can also create a free cloud account to access your cooking data from any browser.
RFX Meat Thermometer Overview
The RFX Meat Thermometer is the wireless probe component of the system. It’s a rugged, durable probe that is inserted into the food you are cooking. It transmits its temperature readings to the RFX Gateway using the same robust RF technology.
Key Features of the RFX Meat Thermometer:
- High-Heat Resistance: The probe handle is designed to withstand ambient temperatures up to 538°C, making it safe for use in high-heat environments like pizza ovens or for searing steaks.
- The Meat as a Heat Sink: When you insert the probe into a piece of meat, the meat itself acts as a protective shield. The internal temperature of the food you’re cooking will not exceed the boiling point of water (212°F or 100°C) until it is completely cooked and all moisture has evaporated. Since the electronics are inside the meat, they are kept at a much lower, and safe, temperature.
- Waterproof and Durable: With an IP69K rating, the probe is completely waterproof. This means it can be safely used in a deep fryer, for sous vide cooking, and is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning.
- Multiple Sensors: The probe contains four independently calibrated sensors near the tip. The system uses the lowest reading from these sensors as the core temperature, which helps ensure you’re getting the most accurate reading from the “true thermal center” of your food.
- Fast Charging and Long Battery Life: A 10-minute charge in its charging block provides up to 50 hours of battery life, with a full charge taking around 20 minutes for over 65 hours of use.
- Calibration Certificate: Each RFX Meat probe comes with a digital certificate of calibration, providing confidence in its accuracy.
- Separate Ambient Probe: An Air probe can be clipped to the grill grate, away from the food, to accurately measure the air temperature inside the cooker. This connects directly back to the gateway.
