MetConnect THP

The Gill Instruments MetConnect THP is a professional, reference-grade modular weather hub engineered for flexible environmental tracking. Unlike all-in-one stations that force all sensors onto a single physical footprint, the THP model isolates core atmospheric profiling from wind telemetry. Built within a heavy-duty, marine-grade 316 Stainless Steel chassis, it houses high-precision base sensors for Temperature, Humidity, and Pressure. By utilising its integrated auxiliary input ports, it acts as a central data collector—allowing users to add custom external sensors and stream a single, time-synchronised digital data packet back to their control grid.

Core Features & Technical Breakdown

  • Reference-Grade Core Sensors: Monitors three fundamental thermodynamic data vectors with exceptional precision out of the box:

    • Air Temperature: Monitored via an ultra-precise PT100 sensor (±0.2°C accuracy across -35°C to +70°C).
    • Humidity Matrix: Relative Humidity (±1.5% RH) with internal calculation loops for Dew Point, Absolute Humidity, and Air Density.
    • Barometric Pressure: High-stability pressure cell (300 to 1100 hPa}, ±0.5 hPa accuracy).

  • 6-Plate Passive Radiation Shield: The internal temperature and humidity components are enveloped by a naturally aspirated, multi-plate radiation shield. The geometry blocks direct solar glare and ground-reflected radiation while maximising ambient airflow, preventing localised heat-island distortions.
  • WMO-Compliant Modular Architecture: Because this model lacks an integrated wind head, it is uniquely suited for strict World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) siting criteria. Operators can install the MetConnect THP at a standard 1.5-meter height for accurate air tracking, while running a remote cable to mount a standalone anemometer at the required 10-meter wind boundary line.
  • Three Open M12 Integration Ports: The base of the 316 Stainless Steel hub features three A-coded M12 circular connectors. These ports feed a regulated 5V power rail out to your external instruments and route their incoming data streams directly into the internal processor.
  • Unified Digital Output String: Collects, time-stamps, and bundles all baseline atmospheric metrics and auxiliary sensor signals into a single serial data package. Supports standard communication protocols including RS232, RS422, RS485, Modbus (RTU/ASCII), SDI-12 v1.3, and NMEA 0183.

Base Sensor Input Capability (Available via M12 Connections)

  • Digital Input: 1 x Contact Closure channel designed for tipping-bucket precipitation gauges.
  • Resistance Input: 1 x 4-wire PT100 temperature probe path (conforming to IEC 60751).
  • Analogue Inputs: 2 x Configurable channels supporting 0-5 vDC voltage lines or 4-20 mA current loops.

The MetConnect THP Weather stations allow you to integrate the unit to a separate remote wind sensor. This allows the wind sensor to be mounted away from the base station and provides a wider option of suitable wind sensors, including the WindMaster anemometers which can provide 3D wind measurements. The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) recommends that wind speed and direction be measured at a height of 10 meters above the ground, over a flat surface with few obstructions. For temperature and humidity the recommendation is for measurements at 1.25m to 2m above the ground.  A list of compatible Gill Anemometers are provided below:

Applications

Deployed by environmental protection agencies and research institutes requiring physical separation between wind tracking mast elevations and baseline ground air tracking.
Installs seamlessly along building perimeters or manufacturing plants to stream highly accurate barometric pressure and ambient dew points into local SCADA arrays.
Placed directly inside crop canopies to log true relative humidity and air temperatures, while linking auxiliary soil moisture probes and leaf wetness sensors into the same hub.
Mounts on utility-scale green energy grids to link reference-grade air temperature readings with an external, back-of-panel PT100 probe and an analogue solar pyranometer.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ Q: Can I connect a Gill WindSonic or other external anemometer to the THP version later if wind data becomes required?
A: Yes, absolutely. The open auxiliary M12 ports are fully capable of accepting digital input strings. You can connect a WindSonic, WindUltra or WindObserver anemometer into the auxiliary connection and configure the MetConnect THP via MetSet to blend the wind vectors into the master serial output sentence.
▶ Q: Why choose the THP over an all-in-one station like the MetConnect One?
A: Siting regulations often mandate that wind measurements must be taken at 10 meters, away from wind breaks, while air temperature must be taken at 1.5 to 2 meters over grass. An all-in-one station forces a compromise. The THP lets you place your core temperature/humidity grid exactly where it needs to be, while cabling out to a remote wind sensor on a taller mast.
▶ Q: Do I need to buy special Gill-branded cables to connect third-party sensors to the auxiliary ports?
A: No. While factory-moulded extension leads are available, the auxiliary ports utilise completely standardised, A-coded 8-way M12 connectors. Any standard industrial M12 8-pin patch cable or field-wireable connector plug can be used to run signals from your third-party sensors directly into the hub box.
▶ Q: Can individual sensor elements inside the integrated stack be replaced on-site if they get damaged?
A: Yes. Unlike conventional all-in-one stations that require replacing the entire unit if a single sensor fails, the MetConnect THP is built modularly. The internal Temperature, Humidity, and Pressure sensor elements sit on accessible, plug-and-play internal boards. If an element suffers accidental field damage, a technician can simply swap out that specific sensor card inside the 316 housing without replacing the main chassis.
