DT82I Data Logger

The dataTaker DT82I is designed as the compact, cost-effective, lower-channel-count sibling to the DT80. The “I” stands for Industrial, meaning it includes dedicated hardware interfaces tailored for factory floor monitoring, SCADA systems, and “smart” industrial sensors. Despite being scaled down, it retains the advanced programming engine, rugged Aluminium housing, and 18-bit precision of the larger models but shrinks the hardware footprint and scaling capability to fit smaller, self-contained applications.

Stripped-Back Analogue Footprint

While the DT80 handles up to 15 inputs, the DT82I features a simplified terminal arrangement. Using the same dual-channel isolation technology, its analogue capabilities are split into:

  • Up to 6 common-referenced (single-ended) inputs.
  • Up to 4 isolated differential (2-wire) inputs.
  • Up to 2 isolated differential (3-wire or 4-wire) inputs.

Crucial Difference: Unlike the DT80 and DT85, the DT82I does not support the CEM20 channel expansion module. It is strictly a standalone logger. If you buy the DT82I, expansion can still achieve unit suitable Modbus, or other serial, devices. It retains the identical universal input capabilities, allowing you to directly wire and scale thermocouples, RTDs, thermistors, 4-20mA current loops, strain gauges, and DC voltages (up to ±50V).

Dedicated Industrial & “Smart” Interfaces Where the DT82I makes up for its fewer analogue terminals is in its industrial connectivity:
  • Dedicated Programmable Analogue Output: It features an isolated 16-bit Digital-to-Analogue Converter (DAC) capable of outputting a controlled 0-10V voltage or a 0-24mA current signal. This allows the logger to generate feedback loops or act as a controller for external industrial equipment.
  • Serial Sensor Hub: It features a highly flexible serial port supporting RS232, RS422, and RS485 networks simultaneously. This is optimised for pulling data streams directly from smart industrial devices, GPS units, or gas analysers via raw ASCII or Modbus protocols.
  • Modbus Integration: It acts natively as a Modbus Master or Slave, making it incredibly easy to map directly into an existing factory SCADA or PLC network.

Omni Instruments are experts are building Modbus networks and supply many sensors, modules and instrumentations that can greatly expand the DT82I inputs from the limited 2 to 6 analogue inputs on the device itself.

Digital Channels & Logic Control

  • Digital Terminals: Features 8 bi-directional digital channels that can track on/off states, trigger state alarms, or act as open-drain control switches.
  • High-Speed Counters: Includes 4 dedicated high-speed counter inputs (and 2 phase encoder inputs) capable of logging pulse frequencies up to 25 kHz, ideal for flow meters or machinery shaft tracking.

Communications & Data Management

  • Web-Based dEX 2.0: Just like the rest of the dataTaker line, it hosts its own internal web server. There is no special software to install; configuration, calibration, and live dashboard building are handled via an standard web browser over Ethernet or USB.
  • Memory & Offloading: Holds up to 10 million data points in its 128MB internal non-volatile memory. It includes a standard USB host port on the chassis for walk-up data harvesting via a standard flash drive.
  • Remote Telemetry: It supports FTP and email. You can configure the logger to automatically email data logs nightly or upload files straight to a secure network server upon an alarm event.

Power & Physical Resilience

  • Internal Battery Included: The DT82I comes equipped with an internal 6V, 1.2Ah rechargeable lead-acid backup battery, whereas the environmental equivalent (the DT82E) relies entirely on external power.
  • Wide Operating Range: It is fully operational from -45°C to 70°C, housed in a heavy-duty IP54-rated casing built to tolerate dust and light spray in rugged environments.

Applications

Utilising the 100V galvanic channel-to-channel isolation of the DT82I to monitor temperature and voltage signals in electrically noisy factory environments without cross-channel interference or sensor damage.
Deploying the logger inside a 1500 Pelicase Portable weatherproof enclosure for long-term climate, meteorological, or agricultural studies, relying on its low power consumption and robust internal data capacity.
Acting as a Modbus Master or Slave to aggregate real-time data from flow meters, PLCs, and power analysers, transmitting the compiled data back via FTP or HTTP.
Deploying alongside specialised vibrating wire sensors (specifically utilising the DT80G variant) to monitor strain, load, and pore pressure in bridges, dams, and tunnels.
Utilising multi-channel analogue inputs to map thermal profiles across pharmaceutical warehouses or food processing facilities, with automated email alerts (SMTP) triggered by threshold breaches.
Monitoring standard 4-20mA process control loops by adding external 100 Ohms shunt resistors across the isolated analogue channels to safely track machinery status and sensor outputs.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ Q: What makes the dataTaker DT82I different from the standard DT80 or DT85 models?
A: The dataTaker DT82I is a specialised, compact industrial logging platform featuring built-in, high-performance **galvanic isolation** between its industrial input channels. Unlike standard data loggers where channels share a common ground, the "I" variant isolates groups of inputs to eliminate electrical ground loops, suppress systemic electrical noise, and prevent damage when connecting to sensors operating at different voltage potentials or in harsh electrical environments. It also features a lower physical channel count, optimising it for targeted, high-protection industrial deployments.
▶ Q: How many sensors can I physically connect to a single DT82I logger?
A: Out of the box, the DT82I features 2 isolated universal analogue input channels. Because dataTaker utilises a flexible internal switching matrix, these 2 channels can be configured to support up to 4 isolated 2-wire differential inputs or up to 6 isolated 3-wire/4-wire single-ended inputs (such as common voltage, current loop, or RTD sensors).
▶ Q: Does the DT82I support Modbus connectivity for integration with PLCs and SCADA networks?
A: Yes. The DT82I functions natively as both a Modbus Master and a Modbus Slave. As a Modbus Master: The logger can actively poll smart field instruments, digital sensors, power meters, or PLCs via its RS232/RS485 serial port or over its Ethernet network to log digital variables directly alongside analogue data. As a Modbus Slave: It can serve its own mapped logged data registers directly to a central SCADA system or local HMI panel via Modbus TCP/IP for real-time facility mapping.
▶ Q: Can the DT82I operate as a standalone device without a continuous network or PC connection?
A: Absolutely. The DT82I is fully engineered for true standalone execution in remote or industrial environments. It houses an internal, high-capacity non-volatile solid-state memory capable of storing up to 10,000,000 data points. Data configuration profiles can be built and deployed locally, and files can be retrieved manually by plugging a standard USB flash drive directly into the front panel—exporting your historical records instantly into a clean, Excel-compatible CSV format.
▶ Q: What power management options are available for the DT82I in remote field placements?
A: The logger features wide-input power circuitry that accepts external supply lines ranging from 10 VDC to 30 VDC, making it directly compatible with standard 12V or 24V industrial supply loops. For remote placements lacking grid power, its highly efficient power-saving modes allow it to sleep between logging intervals. This ultra-low current draw makes it ideal for running continuously on small, external 12V solar-panel setups combined with a sealed lead-acid (SLA) backing battery.
