Description
Choosing the correct transducer is critical to matching your specific material type, thickness range, geometry, and surface temperature.
Detailed Probe Profiles & Technical Data
N05 / N05/90° — The Standard Utility Probe
- Description: The default workhorse dual-element transducer supplied with most MT-series units. Balanced sensitivity and penetration for general engineering inspections.
- Best Used For: Structural steel, raw plates, large-diameter tanks, and machined components.
- Limitations: Avoid using on active steam lines or pipe walls thinner than 1.2 mm.
N07 — The Micro-Bore & Thin-Wall Probe
- Description: High-frequency, small-footprint transducer designed to focus acoustic energy into thin boundaries.
- Best Used For: Small-diameter tubing, curved elbows, hydraulic lines, and copper heat exchangers.
- Technical Tip: Requires extra couplant and steady, vertical pressure due to the reduced surface contact area.
HT5 — High-Temperature Transducer
- Description: Engineered with specialised thermal-insulating delay lines and heavy-duty casing to withstand extreme heat cycles.
- Best Used For: In-service oil and gas pipelines, refinery vessels, and steam pipe monitoring.
- Crucial Operation Rule:
Note on High-Temp Testing: Limit physical probe contact to under 5 seconds when measuring surfaces up to 300°C. Allow the probe to air-cool for at least 15 seconds between measurements to avoid internal crystal damage. Use specialised high-temperature silicone couplant.
N02 — Thick & High-Attenuation Probe
- Description: Low-frequency design with massive penetration capabilities. Low frequencies suffer less scattering in coarse, non-homogeneous structures.
- Best Used For: Grey cast iron, ductile iron, fibreglass, composite structures, and heavy rubber linings.
P5EE — Echo-to-Echo Thru-Paint Transducer
- Description: Developed strictly for gauges featuring Echo-to-Echo firmware. It filters out the thickness of protective surface coatings (paints, epoxies) to read only the underlying metal substrate.
- Best Used For: Painted storage tanks, coated structural columns, and marine hulls.
- Note: Not compatible with base MT150 / MT160 units. Requires MT180 or MT190.
