U-value is used to show the amount of heat loss in a building element such as a wall, floor or roof. It is also referred to as an ‘overall heat transfer co-efficient’ and provides a measure of how well parts of a building transfer heat. A high U-value indicates a poor thermal performance of the building envelope, whilst a low U-value indicates a high level of insulation. They are used as a way of predicting the composite behaviour of an entire building element rather than relying on the properties of individual materials.
