Description
Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) is a colourless gas with a sharp, pungent, irritating odour, often described as smelling like burnt matches. It is a major air pollutant and a significant respiratory irritant, formed primarily from the combustion of sulphur-containing fuels or industrial processes involving sulphur.
Key Properties:
- Colourless: Invisible to the naked eye.
- Sharp, Pungent, Irritating Odour: Detectable at very low concentrations, providing a good warning sign.
- Highly Soluble in Water: When dissolved in water (e.g., in the lungs or in atmospheric moisture), it forms sulphurous acid (H2SO3), which is irritating and corrosive.
- Density: Approximately 2.2 times heavier than air, so it tends to settle in low-lying areas, pits, trenches, and confined spaces.
- Non-flammable: It does not burn.
