Rotronic measurement probes rely on a versatile ecosystem of cables to bridge the gap between the probe and the transmitter, data logger, or control system.Below is a brief overview of the cable categories.
These cables are designed to extend the distance between a standard Rotronic probe (like the HC2A series) and a transmitter or data logger without altering the signal type.
Connectors: Features a mating male connector on one end (to connect to the transmitter/logger) and a mating female connector on the other end (to accept the probe).
Signal Integrity: They utilise shielded, multi-core wiring to protect digital communication (such as UART/Modbus or proprietary Rotronic digital signals) from electromagnetic interference (EMI) over longer distances.
Typical Lengths: Available in standard pre-assembled lengths (e.g., 1m, 2m, 5m) or custom lengths up to maximum digital transmission limits (AC3003 signal booster cable are available for longer extension cables without signal degradation).
Flying tail cables are used when you need to integrate a Rotronic probe directly into a third-party system, custom PLC, or terminal blocks inside a control cabinet.
Connectors: Features a mating female connector on one end to securely attach to the Rotronic probe. The opposite end is stripped back with flying leads (open wires), often pre-tinned or fitted with wire ferrules.
Wiring Scheme: The open wires are colour-coded to correspond with standard Rotronic pinouts (V+, Ground, Digital RX/TX, or analogue outputs where applicable), allowing for straightforward hardwiring into screw terminals.
When a probe needs to be powered by a voltage supply higher than its standard operating rating, active cables are required.
Integrated Electronics: These cables feature an encapsulated, inline electronics module embedded directly within the cable assembly. This module contains a voltage regulator.
Functionality: It steps down higher supply voltages (e.g., 15–24 VDC typically found in industrial loops) to the safe 3.3 V or 5 V required by the probe.
Rotronic offers different outer sheath options to match the specific environmental constraints of the application.
Material: Typically UV-stabilised Polyurethane (PUR) or robust PVC.
Best For: Industrial environments, outdoor installations, or areas exposed to mechanical stress and sunlight. The black carbon-loading provides excellent resistance to UV degradation.
Material: Often Teflon (PTFE), specialised PVC, or food-grade materials.
Best For: Cleanrooms, laboratories, hospitals, and food pharmaceutical processing industries. The white jacket makes it easy to spot contamination or dirt, complies with aesthetic standards of sterile environments, and often boasts higher chemical resistance to aggressive cleaning agents.
HC2 Extensions cable that include voltage regulation to reduce the incoming voltage to 3.3-5vDC suitable for the HC2 Probes.
HC2 Extension Cables with flying tails. These are ideal for connecting probes to your own monitoring hardware.
HC2 Extension cable with male and female connectors. Ideal for HygroPalm or HygroFlex devices to provide more cable between the probe and Rotronic monitoring device.
