Automotive Laser Level Sensor

The Novus TL400-V is a ruggedised, non-contact level transmitter utilising advanced Time-of-Flight (ToF) laser technology. Engineered specifically for mobile machinery, commercial vehicle fleets, and transport logistics, this sensor eliminates the mechanical failures, sticking pivots, and float-arm wear common in mobile tanks. By emitting a precise laser beam, it provides real-time, millimeter-accurate tracking of fluid levels while entirely isolated from the fuel, oil, or water splashing inside the tank.

Core Features & Technical Breakdown

  • Automotive-Standard 0.5 to 4.5 vDC Output: Designed to wire directly into mobile Electronic Control Units (ECUs), truck dashboard telematics, and wireless GPS fleet trackers. The 0.5–4.5 V range leaves a critical 0.5V safety buffer at both ends of a standard 5V system. This allows the vehicle’s diagnostic system to instantly detect faults: a reading of 0V indicates a short to ground, while a reading of 5V indicates an open or broken wire.

  • Superseal Connectivity: Equipped with an integrated 150 mm pigtail cable terminated with a rugged, 3-pin male TE Superseal 1.5 Series connector. This connector is the industry standard for vehicles, offering complete waterproof sealing (IP67) and high resistance to aggressive road salts, mud, engine oils, and constant mechanical vibration.

  • Broad Vehicle Power Compatibility: Supports a wide input voltage range from 8 to 33 vDC. It handles the dirty power environments of mobile equipment seamlessly, operating perfectly on both 12V passenger/light-commercial electrical systems and heavy-duty 24V commercial vehicle batteries.

  • Wireless Mobile Calibration: Built-in Bluetooth allows fleet technicians or mechanics to safely calibrate, configure, and troubleshoot the sensor right from the cab or service bay. Using the free SigNow mobile app, users can easily map irregular vehicle tank profiles and adjust digital slosh-damping filters without opening the tank or exposing wiring.

  • Physical Architecture: Constructed with a heavy-duty, chemically resilient polymer casing featuring a standard SAE 5-bolt mounting pattern. Includes an NBR sealing gasket designed to withstand constant liquid agitation and road friction.

  • Pin 1 (Typically Black): Ground / Power Return (0 V)

  • Pin 2 (Typically Red): Power Supply VCC (+8 to 33 Vdc)

  • Pin 3 (Typically White): Analogue Diagnostic Output (0.5 to 4.5 vDC)

SigNow PC – Software for Sensors and Transmitters Configuration

The SigNow Software makes it possible to quickly and easily configure NOVUS transmitters. The software allows you to save the configuration to a file to be used as a backup or to be sent to other devices. It has a diagnostic function to check if the equipment is reading the process variable correctly.

SigNow Mobile – App for Sensors and Transmitters Configuration

The SigNow Mobile application makes it possible to quickly and easily configure NOVUS transmitters using the Bluetooth on your device. The app allows you to do the same save the configuration, send to other devices, and has the same diagnostic functions. The application allows the mobile device itself to power the device to be configured, through a USB OTG adapter, facilitating use in the field.

Frequently Asked Questions

▶ Q: Why doesn't this sensor use a standard 0 to 5V or 0 to 10V output?
A: In automotive environments, standard 0-5V signals cannot distinguish a completely empty tank from a broken wire (both read 0V). By shifting the output to 0.5–4.5V, your vehicle's ECU can safely flag an error if the voltage drops below 0.5V or rises above 4.5V, making troubleshooting fast and predictable.
▶ Q: How does the sensor handle liquid sloshing around when the vehicle is moving?
A: The TL400-V features smart, built-in digital filtering. Through the SigNow Bluetooth app, you can increase the signal damping/smoothing filter. This tells the internal processor to ignore sudden spikes caused by vehicle acceleration, braking, or cornering, passing a smooth, true average level to your telematics device.
▶ Q: Can I use this on a vehicle with a 24V electrical system, or does it require a 12V regulator?
A: No regulator is required. The internal power supply handles anything from 8 to 33 vDC. It is perfectly happy running directly off a standard 12V truck battery or a heavy-duty 24V agricultural/construction power grid, and it is protected against common automotive electrical surges.
