The Aquaread Optical Refined Oil Electrode is a highly sensitive digital sensor engineered to detect and measure refined petroleum products and fuel contamination in situ. Operating on the principle of ultraviolet (UV) fluorometry, the sensor projects a targeted UV excitation light beam at 285 nm directly into the water column. Aromatic hydrocarbons present in refined oils absorb this high-energy light and instantaneously fluoresce, emitting a shifted signal that the sensor isolates and measures through a tightly filtered 350 nm to 440 nm window to determine parts-per-million concentration levels.
What this electrode offers over universal optical arrays is its specialised wavelength tuning, which provides extreme sensitivity to processed oils rather than crude petroleum or natural organic matter. Equipped with ultra-hard, optically polished sapphire windows instead of standard resin or glass lenses, the sensor eliminates calibration drift caused by grit abrasions during deployment in turbulent industrial effluents. Biofouling and sediment mitigation are tailored as system choices; while entry-level configurations on AP-LITE, AP-2000, and AP-5000 probes operate as static arrays for manual grab sampling, the electrode natively aligns with the motorised central wipers standard on the heavy-duty AP-6000 and AP-7000 platforms for continuous, unattended field logging.
