Phycocyanin Electrode

The Aquaread Optical Phycocyanin Electrode is a highly sensitive, digital sensor engineered to detect and track freshwater cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) concentrations in real time. Operating via specialized sub-surface fluorescence, the sensor targets the unique phycocyanin accessory pigments found within live cyanobacterial cells by emitting a precise excitation beam of orange-red light at 610 nm. The sensor then isolates and captures the resulting return emissions within a filtered 650 nm to 700 nm window, outputting real-time biomass data before a full visual bloom materializes.

What this electrode offers over generic green-algae or standard chlorophyll sensors is its absolute specificity toward toxic cyanobacteria strains in inland water bodies. Outfitted with scratch-resistant, optically dense sapphire lenses instead of standard commercial plastics, it mitigates optical drifting caused by sediment abrasions. Active biofouling prevention is available as an option depending on the chosen deployment setup; while standard configurations on AP-LITE, AP-2000, and AP-5000 multi-parameter probes utilize passive protective shrouds for grab sampling, the electrode interfaces natively with the heavy-duty motorized central cleaning wipers on AP-6000 and AP-7000 platforms for extended, unattended field profiling.

Key Features

  • Cyanobacteria-Specific Tuning: Emits at a 610 nm excitation wavelength to isolate phycocyanin pigments, eliminating false biomass readings caused by typical green algae or background organic matter.
  • Dual Auto-Ranging Precision: Dynamically shifts sensitivity scales from 0.0  to 99.9mµg/L up to a high-capacity 500mµg/L upper threshold to track early-stage cell growth alongside dense toxic blooms.
  • Ultra-Hard Sapphire Optics: Fitted with rugged sapphire windows that shield the internal transmitter and receiver electronics from micro-abrasions in high-energy river systems or turbulent inflows.
  • Flexible Biofouling Profiles: Operates as a static, low-maintenance optical sensor on handheld probes or integrates directly with the automated mechanical central wipers of advanced AP-6000 and AP-7000 platforms.
  • Universal Aux Port Adaptability: Screws directly into the standard auxiliary optical ports of all modular Aquaprobes, preventing the need for single-parameter monitoring hardware or extra surface cabling.

Applications

  • Drinking Water Intake Safeguarding: Providing real-time warning logs for cyanobacteria spikes to prevent taste-and-odour issues and dangerous microcystin loading at treatment facilities.
  • Recreational Water Body Profiling: Monitoring public lakes, state parks, and swimming beaches to deliver automated public safety notices during dangerous algal blooms.
  • Reservoir Nutrients Surveillance: Mapping long-term eutrophication baselines and tracking blue-green algae migration trends related to agricultural runoff.
  • Limnological Ecosystem Studies: Gathering high-resolution spatial and vertical profiles of blue-green algae densities within layered or stratified freshwater columns.
