Chlorophyll Electrode

The Aquaread Optical Chlorophyll Electrode is a highly sensitive, digital sensor engineered to measure active chlorophyll-a concentrations and monitor live algal biomass in situ. Operating on the principle of fixed-response fluorescence, the sensor emits a precise excitation beam of blue light at 470 nm into the water column. Photosynthetic pigments present in live cells absorb this light and naturally emit a longer fluorescent wave, which the electrode detects within a tightly filtered 650 nm to 700 nm return window to prevent measurement distortion.

What this electrode offers over universal commercial alternatives is its direct, plug-and-play alignment with Aquaread’s modular multi-parameter ecosystem. Outfitted with ultra-hard, scratch-resistant sapphire lenses rather than standard optical plastics, it eliminates the risks of micro-abrasions caused by sand particles in turbulent field environments. Active mechanical biofouling prevention is available as an adjustable system capability; while standard deployments on AP-LITE, AP-2000, and AP-5000 probes rely on static passive shrouds, the sensor integrates seamlessly with the heavy-duty motorized central wipers exclusive to the AP-6000 and AP-7000 platforms to preserve operational calibration during extended, long-term deployments.

Key Features

  • Narrow-Band 470nm Excitation: Focuses energy on the peak absorption wavelength of Chlorophyll-a to minimise cross-interference from background sediment or decaying organic tannins.
  • Dual Auto-Ranging Capability: Automatically transitions between two high-resolution sensitivity scales (0.0  to 99.9mµg/L and 100  to 500mµg/L) to manage both low-nutrient lakes and active algal blooms.
  • Ultra-Hard Sapphire Optics: Fitted with premium sapphire windows that guard internal electronic components against abrasive wear in high-energy coastal or riverine monitoring setups.
  • Flexible Biofouling Options: Functions as a static sensor within compact handheld frameworks or pairs directly with the active mechanical wiper systems integrated into the heavy-duty AP-6000 and AP-7000 probe assemblies.
  • Universal Auxiliary Configuration: Screws directly into the standard auxiliary optical ports of all modular Aquaprobes, eliminating the need to procure independent single-parameter logging devices.

Applications

  • Algal Bloom Early Warning: Tracking real-time chlorophyll spikes in drinking water reservoirs to prevent cyanobacteria or taste-and-odor compound developments.
  • Eutrophication Trend Analysis: Monitoring agricultural runoff zones, coastal lagoons, and urban waterways for excessive nutrient loading signals.
  • Oceanographic Ecosystem Research: Collecting baseline photosynthetic productivity data across varying marine environments and estuary structures.
  • Aquaculture Concession Safeguarding: Supplying continuous biomass tracking around commercial shellfish and fish farms to alert operators of toxic bloom threats.
