Safeye Xenon 700 Open Path Gas Detection System

Safeye Xenon 700 Open Path Gas Detection System

Quick Overview

The Safeye Xenon 700 is an infrared transmitter used to detector hydrocarbons in wide areas in a variety of industrial applications, eg offshore platforms or oil & gas refineries. The Safeye systems consists of an infrared source and an infrared detector unit separated over a line of sight to detect and quantify flammable gas presence. The unit provides a 4-20mA output for any gas detection, alarm relays and an RS485 Modbus interface to a PC or the intrinsically safe handheld communicator kit. The detector and source units are ATEX approved, SIL2 certified. Both units and the tilt mounts are enclosed in 316L Stainless Steel and have an IP66/7 rating. These units are most often used in addition to point type gas detectors to monitor a wider area.

The Safeye Xenon 700 consists of an advanced Xenon Flash infrared transmitter (source) and infrared detector (receiver), separated over a line of sight from 13 feet (4 meters) up to 460 feet (140 meters) to detect and quantify flammable gas presence, even when challenged by extremely harsh environments where dust, fog, rain, snow or vibration can cause a high reduction of signal.

The open path analyzes atmospheric absorption at three selected spectral bands, two in a region where the target gas absorbs and one where it does not absorb. The ratio between these absorption lines can provide accurate information of the gas concentration along an optical path. When no gas is present, the two signals are equal whereas if gas is present, measurement and reference signals are different. These three singles contribute to the reduction of false diagnostics and assure high immunity to false alarms.

The Safeye monitors the level of gas present between the source and detector units and provides a measurement out in LEL.meters instead of in %LEL as used with point type gas detectors. Both examples below show gas clouds with a reading of 1 LEL.meter.

The Safeye Xenon 700 includes heated optics on the transmitter and receiver to address icing, condensation and snow and the infrared technology will maintain operational integrity up to 90% obstruction and accepts up to a 1°misalignment tolerance. No matter the application, the Safeye Xenon 700 is an ideal open path system and thousands of first generation units have been installed on offshore platforms, refineries and other onshore locations around the world.
